In vein of the current unrest in Mumbai city regarding the conflict between Raj Thackeray’s MNS and Jaya Bachchan, an Amitabh Bachchan film seems to be affected the most. The premiere of Amitabh Bachchan’s latest film The Last Lear that was scheduled to happen tonight at a suburban multiplex has been cancelled.
The MNS political party has been threatening that they won’t allow the film to release in Mumbai ever since Jaya Bachchan made a casual remark at the Drona music launch on Sunday that she would be speaking in Hindi and the Marathi people should excuse her. This enraged the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and they have been shouting slogans against the Bachchans. The party even went on a rampage burning effigies of Jaya Bachchan and tearing posters of The Last Lear .
Commenting on the issue in his blog, Amitabh Bachchan wrote, “The casual off the cuff remarks made by Jaya at the music launch function were without malice or deliberate intent, but if it has caused hurt to the sentiments of Maharashtra, Maharashtrians and indeed the city and citizens of Mumbai, then she must seek regret and offer apology. Everything that we possess today is what came to us from this great state and city. We never have and never can look at Maharashtra with disrespect. If inadvertently this is what has been construed, then we apologize and are sorry and seek forgiveness for any sentiments that have been hurt.”
But now to avoid any untoward incident or inconvenience, the makers of The Last Lear have cancelled tonight’s premiere. However Amitabh Bachchan who has just returned from his foreign schedule is very much promoting the film and is also addressing the media later today on the film that has won rave reviews on its screening in several international film festivals.
We just hope that the film releases safely on Friday without turning into a scapegoat to a political conspiracy.
